Mohegan Sun in talks to purchase Palmer land it's now leasing

Mohegan Sun is in talks with Northeast Realty about purchasing the 150 acres off Thorndike Street that it is currently leasing to realize its goal of building a resort casino there.

While legislation legalizing casino gaming is on hold in Boston, it states that any potential casino operator must own the land where a resort casino will be constructed, meaning that if the legislation passes as written, Connecticut-based Mohegan would be out of the running - unless it takes over the property from Northeast.

Two years ago, Mohegan, through its tribal gaming authority, entered into a 50-year lease with Northeast on the prime commercial property across from the Massachusetts Turnpike Exit 8. The lease carries an option to renew for another 49 years.
